Queensland Police Museum Presentation

Thank you, Queensland Police Museum, for hosting my book talk on February 23, 2025. It was wonderful to meet so many lovely people.

The PAcific Hotel Barber

Herbert Kopit went on a stealing spree on Australia's Gold Coast in 1934-35.  He was a hotel barber.

Gympie Railway Station

The gruesome tale of the Mail Train Murders starts at Gympie Railway Station, Queensland.

Herbert Kopit The Wynnum Edition

Herbert Kopit was a barber. A barber stole from trains and boarding houses. Herbert would pose as a guest or commercial salesman to gain trust.

The Dandy

Newspapers described Herbert as a 'dandy'. Always well presented with nice suits and perfect hair.

Both Sides of the Law

Herbert's family could not fathom why he chose a life of crime. His uncle was a warder at Long Bay gaol and intervened when he could.

Kopit's Bungled Arrival

Hundreds of people waited on the platform of South Brisbane Station for the arrival of the hated double murderer. His arrival was a bungled mess.

Queensland Police and Herbert Kopit

Check out this great video

The Queensland Supreme Court

There was standing room only when Kopit stepped into the dock at the Queensland Supreme Court in 1936.

Tromping around in Kopit's footsteps.

It's a strange feeling to walk around my city where Kopit once did as he fled the scene of Australia's only double murder committed on a train.

Research and References

I am so lucky to have generous people helping me with my research.

Pomona Railway Station - Jumping the Rattler

Herbert kopit jumped the rattler around SE Queensland for a couple of months before committing his horrible crime. This video is about how he carried out his life of crime.

Cooroy Railway Station - Jumping the Rattler

The day before Kopit boarded the train and committed his horrible crime, he was jumping the rattler. Find out what he was up to just before committing murder.

Tewantin - Jumping the Rattler

How did Kopit try to 'barber' guests in SE Queensland? He was in Tewantin just days before killing two men and maiming the conductor on the mail train.
